Fighting for Freedom

Couple Arrested at Bush Rally, Woman loses FEMA job – Settles Lawsuit for $80,000 – CommonDreams.org

This article is about freedom. Supporters of the war have argued that somehow we are fighting for freedom, while ignoring the fundamental freedoms that we have been losing as a nation for the 7+ years since Bush took office.

The 1st Amendment is the most cited section of our Bill of Rights, yet at a rally for the man who holds the office of the President of the country, this right was violated.

Thank goodness they won their case!  Now that they have… feel free to wear your “I HATE BUSH” shirt everywhere you go :)

Globalization of America’s Misogynist Values Resisted in Iran

http://www.cnn.com/2008/WORLD/meast/04/29/iran.barbie.ap/index.html?eref=rss_topstories

Prosecutor General Ghorban Ali Dori Najafabadi is speaking out against Barbie and other Western cultural toys being imported in Iran. I love his explanation:

“Undoubtedly, the personality and identity of the new generation and our children, as a result of unrestricted importation of toys, has been put at risk and caused irreparable damages,” he said.

I agree. This sentence applies to all children, not just those who haven’t been exposed to this sort of indoctrination into American misogyny, but it is clear to me that these images of women are damaging to all of us.

I once heard a Muslim woman talking about oppression. She said that it is American women who are oppressed… disrespected and valued only for our bodies. This leads us to disrespect our bodies to make them fit into the societally defined “perfect woman.” We are so caught up in being trendy, or beautiful (as defined by others), or whatever, that very few American women ever even take the time to question their own femininity.

The Muslim woman said that in her country, women are treated like diamonds. I don’t know if I agree with her about that (but who am I to say?), but I think she has a point. At least there they are not told that they should defile, mutilate, starve, or otherwise change their bodies to fit in.

Military Works to Keep us Ignorant of Truth in Iraq

Democracy Now! | Former Marine Returns to Iraq as Embedded Photographer Only to be Ordered Home

This transcript covers Amy Goodman’s interview with an ex-soldier, now journalist/photographer, who was kicked out of Iraq while covering a story there during General Petraeus’ recent visit in Washington.

The article is linked above, and some important excerpts are below:

AMY GOODMAN: What was the reason they gave?

JAMES LEE: Originally I was told that an order came directly from the office of General Petraeus, that they didn’t want any Western media covering the events and—

AMY GOODMAN: Why?

JAMES LEE: Because Petraeus was in Washington at the time, and they were concerned about images coming out from Basra that didn’t support their mission at the time.

So basically, Petraeus, and/or the US Military didn’t want real reports of what is happening in Iraq, because they want us to believe them when they tell us the surge is successful.

AMY GOODMAN: Why didn’t they want you to see what—or what was the reality on the ground?

JAMES LEE: The reality on the ground was, more than a thousand Iraqi soldiers refused to fight the Mahdi Army, whether they were afraid that they didn’t have the ability to do it or they didn’t believe that they should be fighting the Mahdi Army. For whatever reason, many of them put down their weapons and refused to go into Basra and fight the Mahdi Army. And I think those images would have been very powerful, and I think it would have created a lot of doubt on the part of the American public about the Iraqis army’s commitment to coalition missions in Iraq.

This country was founded on the idea of public participation in politics… that’s what democracy is all about after all.  Now that political participation is rising (thank you Barack!), and governmental corruption is at an all time high in America, no wonder they want to keep us ignorant of the truth!

The US government is to send consumers rebates totalling more than $100bn, ahead of schedule.

Exxon’s Profit Surges To First-Quarter Record On Higher Gas Prices – washingtonpost.com

Does anyone else feel like this “stimulus package” was a deal for the Oil Industry, and that our economy wouldn’t be suffering if Exxon weren’t raking in over 40 Billion Dollars in profits in one year, or if 43% of our federal tax dollars weren’t going to (2-6 times outsourced) weapons and defense contractors and other costs for this illegal war!?!

Resist The Princess

Resist the princesses – Los Angeles Times

Check out this article!  I have been researching the deep misogyny within Disney programming and films, and this article sums up a lot of problems with American children’s #1 source of socialization media.

If you haven’t ever noticed the gender discrimination and development of a weaker sex in Disney movies, listen up!  Western society has a tendency to place a heavy emphasis on biology, YET, there are VERY FEW biological differences AT BIRTH between a male and a female.

It is clear, in America at least, that there are obvious differences between men and women, however, I argue that this is a development of our socialization process, whereas children who are trained to be nurturing, pretty, needy, dependent, and stupid will end up that way, and children who are trained to be tough, independent, mentally sound and good at building and breaking things will likewise end up that way.

If our little girls didn’t watch Disney movies, and instead got toys that encouraged critical thinking and personal development over toys that encourage them to care for others and stay pretty, would there be such differences between men and women?

ALL research shows that masculinity and femininity are damaging to one’s psyche.  Androgynous people are mentally the healthiest people in our society… so why are they looked down upon?

What do you think?

Veteran for Peace

Democracy Now! | A Soldier’s Peace: Iraq War Vet Walks 500 Miles Across Native Utah to Call for Troop Withdrawal
This is the transcripts of one of Amy Goodman’s interviews. She met with Sergeant Marshall Thompson, who worked in Iraq for one year as a military journalist. Thompson led a 500-mile walk across Utah (where ratings for Bush were the highest at the start of the war, and where they’ve been called the “reddest state in the nation”). Here’s an excerpt of what he had to say:

SGT. MARSHALL THOMPSON: There is a change in tide in America, and you’re part of it today. We’re sending a mandate from the people to the government of the United States and to the representatives of Utah, especially, that Utah does not support war, we support peace. And we support a plan for Iraq. Thank you.

We have this wonderful display from Eyes Wide Open. There’s one pair of boots for every National Guard member who died in Iraq. This includes the Utah soldiers who have died. There’s also fifty children’s shoes, representing the fifty civilians who died for every one US soldier. This war needs to become real to the American people. The military is at war, America is not. And that needs to change.

Did you get that… 50 CIVILIANS HAVE DIED FOR EVERY ONE US SOLDIER DEAD! And we have the nerve to get upset at the number of military deaths and rarely even mention the murders that are taking place of people WHO DID NOT SIGN UP FOR THIS SHIT!

I have a really fabulous book called “Addicted to War,” it is an illustrated book about the history of America’s militarism, and it’s very informative. I’d LOVE to lend it to you… after all, a good book should NEVER sit on a shelf!

Think we might hear more veterans protesting the war if they weren’t killing themselves at a rate of 18 PER DAY?!?!

BlackAndBrownNews: The Obama Feminists: Why Young Women Are Supporting Obama – Off The Bus on The Huffington Post

This is a brilliant article expressing the core values important to feminists, and why Obama, not Clinton, is the ideal candidate to represent these values.

“Push” by Sapphire

This book is a powerful example of my belief that no matter how bad a situation you may be in, you can always gain power through writing.  It is an incredibly tough book to read, not because it is complex, though it does take some getting used to reading the language used, but because of the situations and stories presented.  It was assigned to me in a Women In Literature class, and I recommend it to anyone over the age of 16 *****
